Aluminum Screen Replacement

How aluminum screen systems hold together

Most enclosure and patio screens sit in aluminum frames with a groove, called a channel, along each edge. The mesh is pressed into that channel and locked in place by spline, a flexible cord rolled in on top of it.

The aluminum itself is durable, but the parts around it wear out. Spline hardens and shrinks with sun exposure, fasteners can corrode in humid air, and the mesh gradually weakens. When any of those pieces fail, the screen loosens or tears.

This is why a screen that looks fine from across the yard can still be failing up close. Running a hand along the edge of a panel often reveals spline that has lifted or mesh that has started to pull free, long before an obvious tear appears.

Re-Screening Pro

Diagnosing problems in aluminum screen frames

Before aluminum screen replacement, we check each frame for the problems that would cause new screen to fail early. A rescreen is only as good as the frame it sits in.

Most of these issues can be addressed during the job. If a frame problem goes beyond screen work, we will tell you what we found.

  • Spline that is brittle, shrunk or popping out of the channel
  • Corroded or loose screws at frame joints
  • Bent or dented channels that will not grip spline
  • Gaps between screen and frame edges
  • Mesh that is torn, sagging or sun-damaged

What we look for

Aluminum frame screen problems we fix

01

Popped spline

Spline that has worked out of the channel lets the screen go slack.

02

Corroded screws

Rusty or loose fasteners let frame members shift and stress the mesh.

03

Torn mesh

Tears from impacts, pets or age are replaced with fresh screen.

04

UV-weakened screen

Sun-damaged mesh is replaced before it splits across the panel.

05

Uneven tension

Panels that are tight on one side and loose on the other are reset evenly.

06

Mesh upgrades

Heavier or finer mesh options can be discussed for specific areas.

Good to know

What a proper rescreen looks like

Old mesh and spline are pulled out and the channels are cleaned. New screen is laid across the frame, rolled in with fresh spline, tensioned evenly and trimmed so no loose edges remain.

Mesh types, including standard fiberglass, no-see-um, pet-resistant and privacy styles, can be discussed during the assessment. All aluminum screen replacement work is backed by our customer satisfaction guarantee.

Why it is worth fixing early

Small tear, bigger problem

Screen damage rarely stays the same size. Here is how a little tear usually grows.

  1. 01

    A small tear

A pinhole, a popped spline or a snag from a branch or pet claw.

  2. 02

    Wind works it open

Every breeze and summer storm pulls on the loose edge.

  3. 03

    The panel lets go

The tear runs, the mesh sags and the panel starts to flap.

  4. 04

    Bugs and debris get in

Now insects, leaves and fronds come right through.

Catching damage early often means a simpler fix, like one panel or a strip of spline, instead of a whole wall.

Questions

Aluminum Screen Replacement FAQ

Can my existing aluminum frames be reused?

In most cases, yes. If the frames are straight and the channels are in good shape, only the mesh and spline need replacing.

What causes spline to fail?

Sun and heat cause spline to harden and shrink over time. Once it shrinks, it no longer grips the screen firmly in the channel, and the mesh loosens.

Why do the screws on my frame look rusty?

Humid, salty air can cause fasteners to corrode. Corroded screws may loosen and let the frame shift, so we check them during the assessment.

Can I choose a different mesh when you rescreen?

Often, yes. Options like pet-resistant, no-see-um or privacy-style screens can be discussed during the assessment.
